“Wikipedia is where facts go to live and where truth tellers of all types can contribute to an accurate historical record. A Wikimedian-in-Residence will help CUNY share information available in its archives and the expertise of its faculty with the public. That’s a good thing.” – craig newmark, founder of craigslist and the namesake of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY
CUNY’s First Wikimedian-in-Residence
In a partnership between CUNY and Wikimedia New York City, CUNY’s Wikimedian-in-Residence, Richard Knipel, is actively working with faculty, students, and staff to make the University’s research more accessible to the public while contributing to the Wikimedia umbrella of websites.
This project leverages the incredible research expertise of CUNY’s faculty and students, along with select items from CUNY’s archives, to improve and expand information available to the public on Wikipedia, while connecting a wider audience with CUNY’s rich library and archive collections.
As Wikimedian-in-Residence, Richard is now available to CUNY’s faculty, staff, and researchers via ongoing online and in-person events across campuses to train them on how to embed their research in the Wikimedia suite of projects with the intention of making such resources more publicly available.
The two-year pilot is funded by the philanthropy of craigslist founder Craig Newmark and is a partnership with Wikimedia New York City, a local Wikimedia chapter that collaborates with volunteers and institutions to advance projects like Wikipedia.
